Short vin do I need to register for one

So I've recently ordered a mr2 spyder and just received it and am shortly gonna be taking it for a out of province and was told by my insurance company that because of the short vin (16 digits not 17) that I might need to register for a vin for the car but I believe i remember reading that the 16 should work I'm just curious if I need to register for one? I'm in bc if that matters

No, you shouldn't need to apply for a new VIN. As long as you can find the short VIN in two locations on the car and show them to the agent doing the registration you should be ok.
