Thread: Daytime Running Light DRL Solution

Question I'm a little stumped here...

Please forgive me... but I wish to know how to undo the DRL that were installed on my '98 JDM Impreza STi.

I bought this STi at the end of November, and since then it's been in my backyard... where between monsoons and blizzards I've been doing little things to it.

I don't want my headlights on during daylight hours while my car is being driven. I like having the parking lights on all the time... but not the headlights.

This STi was rewired for DRL when it was brought over to BC three years ago from Japan. I'm usually pretty handy when it comes to working on cars, but I'm having trouble trying to discover how the DRL were implemented.

I was actually able to find and contact the fella who had imported this car. (I'm at least the third owner of the car since he sold it.) I sent him the following images asking if maybe this was how he had jury-rigged the wiring for DRL. There appears to be a yellow jumper wire connected to a purple (violet) wire which goes to a unused gray plug. I believe this gray plug would've been meant for the fog lights if the car had been so equipped.

He maintains that this doesn't look familiar to him. He's offered to look at the car to refresh his memory, but off the top of his head he couldn't remember exactly how he had jury-rigged the DRL. He suggested I check around the headlight relays... but I found nothing.

I've looked in every location posted in this thread. I can find nothing "added" to the fuse panel (shown above), or to the fuse box in the engine bay.

I should mention that I haven't tried disconnecting the jumper shown in the images above to see what happens... mostly because I haven't had a battery in the car while I've been working on it.

Does anyone feel that the yellow jumper wire in the photos actually is what I'm looking for? If not, any other suggestions?

I've also shied away from disconnecting that yellow jumper as I've suspected it might have to do with other devices which have been installed by previous owners... immobilizer/alarm, a turbo timer, and a Rev Speed Meter.

I uncovered my ECU for the first time, and now definitely suspect that there's a connection between the yellow jumper wire and something other than the DRL. Notice the two bright red plastic wire connector things in the images above? They look suspiciously like all the bright red plastic wire connector things in the image below.

Would someone care to suggest what all these connections might be for? Are they possibly to do with the immobilizer/alarm?

After searching and reading I'm finding mixed information about JDM vehicles passing the DRL part of the OOP inspection in Alberta.
Will aftermarket LED DRL's pass the OOP in Alberta ? (Philips Daylight LED kits) for example
I tried to add a link but I need more posts lol.

Yes, those should pass, but sometimes you're at the mercy of the person doing the inspection and their level of knowledge. DRL's aren't necessarily headlights at all. For example look at first gen NA Miata's, their DRL are 1153 bulb turn signals. If in doubt, just use incandescent bulbs for the inspectionand swap them out later. Fog lights can work as DRL too, but just to be sure, wire the headlights as DRL for inspection is guaranteed success.

Anyone here have an evo 8 or 9 with jdm hid? And did you have to use usdm headlight housing to pass? Or did you somehow wire up day time running to the stock jdm lights and passed? And on the topics of lights. What if the model of car you got does not have a dot equivalent for the rear lights?

    Thanks for any help guys.

Trying to do my research on what all the extra parts are needed to pass an OOP.

Find who sells RHD JDM in your area and ask them who does their inspections. Sorry, no other advice to give.
