The British are probably the luckiest besides other countries which have virtually no laws or restrictions on imported JDM cars.
As far as I know basically any car from Japan can be imported, is this correct?

No.... they have restrictions.
I was one of the first people to start importing vehicles to the UK when I was living there back in the early 90's and had a company called MVI Services. Demand was huge and I moved the company to Japan shortly after and was the only Japanese based car export company that could supply a vehicle direct from Japan to your door at trade prices, registered and with a 3yr UK warranty. We were brought out by another Jap company in 2000 which is when I started a new company which is smaller and will not allow it to become as big as MVI was. Big companies lose touch with customers...... just look at *** for example... at least with us you can speak to the buyer, inspector, shipping person and director.... at once...
One of the reasons I sold MVI was due to the new restrictions that were coming in called "SVA" testing. This affected all vehicles from 1997 onwards. Some models passed the testing and some would not.
If you Google SVA you will find a list of the vehicles that pass.
LOL I won't name the name here but I think I know the company you're talking about.
Thanks for that information. It sounds similar but perhaps not as restrictive as the Australian market.
In each case most countries can import newer cars compared to what we can do here in Canada. Our government is basically moving for an all-out embargo due to pressure from local car dealerships.
name names.
SO what company do you own right now?
SVA is Now called IVA and the test restrictions have changed (and as always got more expensive) what happened to the good old days when all you needed was a MOT to register any JDM car, I think the Government saw a good money maker and started the SVA and Now the IVA
Google "IVA" and see the changes

Was this your old company? looks like it has dissolved
Welcome to the forums David. I think BraveAuto mentioned he sold the company long ago, this sounds like a completely different company or maybe something to do with the new ownership incorporating and dissolving shortly after.
It sounds like you're familiar with the JDM scene in the UK. What's going on over there right now?
I always find UK based sites for JDMs usually have the most info for most cars.
Thanks for the warm welcome JDM, Good Site you have here
The UK scene has suffered quite a bit with imports, the number of cars arriving at our docks from Japan has gone down around 60% or so,
The new regulations regarding the SVA /IVA has not effected me as the cars that i bring in from Japan are all highly modified and under 10 years old.
i use a company here in the UK whom have their own specialist mechanics in Japan who are involved heavily with some of the top named tuners
any way i am not here to promote my services thought i would join as i am passionate about Japanese cars and my wife is originally from Halifax (CA)
