I had this exact same situation a while back where a US seller brought the car up and dumped it on me after I hadn't done any homework. I paid for the car, and he flat out left it at my house with no bill of sale or anything. I found an old title in it but he had left the country to god knows where.

I called ICBC and said the car was abandoned on my property, and after some going back and forth with forms, letters and signatures. I eventually was given ownership

I know this is an old post, but I think it is important to consult multiple VIN decoders, not just Carfax or AutoCheck. Your car report provider might be missing details that may not be found in others, vice versa.
